Shadow stopped mid-step, "We have to hold off on seeing Remus. I'm sorry little one. Hold onto me, now."
He shifted Eryn onto his back and started to run, suddenly exploding into fur.
And stopped infront of Jaenelle, shifting back and moving Eryn into his arms.
"Jaenelle, whats wrong? Calm down and tell me what happened."
~~~~
Once Jaenelle was gone and he was sure she couldn't hear, Arsen doubled over, coughing violently.
When he was done he felt his eyes water. He felt sick.
His hand was now coated in blood.
"Something's wrong with Arsen. He's....bleeding," Jaenelle's voice was disbelieving, even as she said it. The First didn't bleed- Arsen didn't bleed. It was impossible and totally inconceivable. Something was....very wrong and Arsen wouldn't explain it to her which made her frustrated, angry and afraid. Jaenelle knew that her anger at Arsen was stemming from her fear because, right now he was making her afraid. Very, very afraid. "We went out hunting and then we got ambushed by Daemonar's men. I got captured and Arsen saved me; he used the shadows to fight them off and then...we came home and he was bleeding. I think he's...coughing...up blood, Shadow."
Her voice was nervous and the vampire was shifting her weight from foot to foot, leaning back towards the way she had come, wanting to return to Arsen's side. Shadow had met her about halfway between the city and their house, but Jae already felt that she had already left Arsen alone for too long, especially if something was seriously wrong with him as she was beginning to fear. In her haste, she totally ignored the young child that Shadow was carrying in his arms.
Arsen, love, you better be okay.
~~
Shadow suddenly putting her on his back and his sudden shift into a wolf frightened Eryn so much that she almost released him when he first changed, but her hands remained fisted in his fur and she retained a death grip on his back as he raced through the night. The little shifter managed to enjoy some of the midnight run, but was still severely startled when Shadow shifted back and pulled her back into his arms, burying her face in his chest and grabbing onto the front of his shirt tightly with both hands.
She listened to the whole conversation between the two and realized that this was the Jaenelle that she had supposed to meet tomorrow; that warranted her enough curiousity to turn around and peek shyly at the girl before burying her face back into the werewolf's chest. Then she heard that something was seriously wrong with Arsen- the Arsen that Eryn had been going to for protection- and her world. Eryn shuddered deeply, drawing in tainted air from a world that suddenly seemed to have grown darker; something was wrong and it looked like the world was about to turn its back on her again.
~~
Far away, Daemonar sat back in his chair in Crimson Moon, feet on the table and chest bare with his mate lying in bed, waiting for him, and laughed.
"Calm down, Jaenelle. Just calm down. He'll be fine. Here, take her. She can help you calm down, can't you Eryn?" Shadow smiled at the small girl, walking with Jaenelle to her and Arsen's small home.
~~~~~
Arsen laid down on the bed, stretching out while on his back.
He knew what had happened. In the chaos of the fight, someone had broken a knife in his ribs and the tip was in his lungs.
Or near it.

Eryn snarled weakly at Shadow as he tried to detach her from his shirt, instead burying her needle sharp claws into the fabric, just like any cat, and refusing to let go of him; instead, clutching tighter to him. The little shifter refused to be dislodged and handed over to someone whom she didn't know, especially this Jaenelle individual. For one, she could tell this woman was a vampire and it made her uneasy; after all, vampires were the ones who had made her the way she was- half wild and unable to fully shift into being a human or a cat, stuck somewhere inbetween. They were also the ones who had burned her so badly. Right now, Shadow was the only one that Eryn trusted and she refused to be separated from him.
~~
The little shifter's stubborn refusal to be parted from Shadow made Jaenelle laugh, even though she was worrying desperately over her mate; she could feel his pain echoing down the bond they shared and it was driving her insane, especially him not telling her where the pain was coming from so she could alleviate it. The little shifter, this Eryn, provided a ray of sunshine and laughter and a fear filled moment in Jaenelle's life and, for that, she was gratefuly. All she could really focus on right now was the fear that Arsen would leave her, somehow, slip away; he was already bleeding, something that shouldn't be physically possible, what else could happen to him? But, Eryn, despite the smell of burning flesh that suspiciously hung around her made the worry fade for a moment.
"It seems you have an ardent admirer, Shadow."

Shadow smiled, "It seems so. Hurry."
He quickened his step, holding Eryn to his chest.
~~~~
Arsen had just begun to wonder if he could get the tip out when the door opened.
"Arsen?"
"In here!" Arsen called back, paying no mind to the shifter he scented. He just wanted them to hurry up.
Jaenelle ran ahead of Shadow and his bundle of shifter and flitted through the doorway into the bedroom first, jumping on the bed next to Arsen and then sliding his head into her lap before pulling his hand up to look at the blood he had coughed up onto it. Her heart sunk as she looked at the vast amount and she tenderly licked his fingers, cleaning them off gently while she looked down at her mate worriedly. Even if she was mad at him for not telling her what was wrong, she was still worried and his pain caused her pain, stressing her out even more.
It was all her fault. If only, she was smarter, faster, stronger. If only she wasn't Arsen's mate, if she was Immortal. None of this would've happened; Arsen wouldn't have been hurt and Larial wouldn't have died. Nothing would've happened because Jaenelle would've died almost a hundred years ago. Jae forced herself not to come close to tears, but she could feel the blood that substituted for tears welling up behind her eys.
~~
Eryn watched as the vampiress raced fowards and into a dilapidated shack that looked just about ready to fall over and then she glanced up at Shadow. This is where the great Arsen, the man that the Vampire King was afraid of, and his mate, a Hunter-turned-vampire, lived? This shack was worse than the 'houses' that Eryn'd been forced to stay in and that was saying something. However, the little shifter continued to cling stubbornly to Shadow's shirt, trusting him to take care of her, even if it meant taking her into a nearly falling down house.
"Jaenelle," Arsen murmured, reaching up to touch her face, "Calm down. I'm fine. This is nothing."
Which, despite how comforting it was not, it was the truth. Worse had happened to him.
But the blood could be seen at the back of his throat, resting on his molars.
Shadow walked in then, finally managing to set Eryn on the bed as he stood next to the vampires.
"What did you do?" Shadow snarled, a rolling thunder.
"Got in a fight. The knife broke in a lung."
"Idiot. Jaenelle, hold him still. This'll hurt," Shadow said, flexing his hand.
Jaenelle knew worse had happened; she had seen it happen. The vampiress had also seen the hand-shaped scar that rested over Arsen's heart and knew that wound must have hurt like hell, but, right now, the blood was making her antsy and nervous. As she had thought numerous times before- Arsen was not supposed to be bleed; he was nearly invincible and now, this....it was the shattering of her illusions coming at a bad time. But, she remained strong and kissed her mate's forehead before shifting his head out of her lap and putting her weight on her knees before clamping down on the First's arms with her hands, caging his top half under her body.
"I've got him," she murmured quietly, looking up at Shadow with pain-filled eyes, but refusing to let any of the fear she was feeling steal over her face or into her voice.
~~
Eryn whined as Shadow finally disengaged her claws from his shirt and set her on the ground. The smell of blood was strong in the air and making her nervous and she edged closer to the werewolf, suddenly darting forward and attaching herself to Shadow's pant leg, digging her claws in and spitting and hissing and snapping at anyone's hands that came too close to her claws to try and get her to let go.
"No, you can't leave me!" the little shifter insisted, leaning her head against Shadow's leg and letting a few tears leak out. "No..."
Shadow ruffled Eryn's hair, "I'm not leaving. Just stand at the end of the bed. You won't want to see this."
Arsen smiled at Jaenelle, softly telling her: "I love you."
Then Shadow's hand sliced into Arsen's side, snapping a few ribs. Arsen cried out and started to twist under Jaenelle's body. He was calm untill Shadow punctured his lung.
Arsen howled. Yes, he had been through worse, but he hadn't been concious. In a way he had, but hadn't.
"Easy, Arsen," Shadow said, pulling out the offending peice of metal. The tip was no more than the size of a quater, "You made a big fuss over a tiny piece of metal."
Arsen hissed at him.
"He'll be fine now, Jaenelle. He just needs to sleep. You two better sleep tonight."
Jaenelle forced Arsen's body back into the bed as he cried out and twisted desperately; she didn't like having to hold her mate down, it hurt that he was in pain and it was her fault. Finally, it was over and Jae sat back tiredly, running her fingers tiredly through Arsen's hair; he was very strong and it had taken a lot out of her just to keep him pinned to the bed. Absently, she nodded at Shadow, leaning down and kissing Arsen's forehead again.
"I love you too," she murmured back quietly before bringing her wrist up to her mouth and slitting it across with one of her fangs. "Now drink and don't give me any nonsense about being fine and we're not going hunting again tonight."
Jae looked up at Shadow, still extending her wrist to Arsen, as she saw the little shifter stir uneasily at the werewolf's feet.
"Thanks, Shadow. I'll make sure he sleeps and we'll be seeing you tomorrow, I guess."
~
Eryn didn't look away as she watched the werewolf dig out the piece of metal that had been lodged in Arsen's lungs. Instead, she watched as Shadow threw it out the window and then went and latched back onto his leg, peeking around it to watch the two vampires on the bed. She blushed lightly at the intimate moment being shared before turning her head away, unable to look at the blood that was trickling down the once-Hunter's wrist.
Arsen pushed her wrist away, "You need it... much more than... I..."
He sounded breathless and closed his eyes, nestling back against the pillows.
Now he could sleep.
~~~~
"Yes," Shadow said, lifting Eryn into his arms again, "I have a very important matter tn speak with you both about.
"And Jaenelle, keep him off his side until it heals. I don't want to have to rip any thing else out."
With that, Shadow turned and walked back out, treading carefully through the house as worn as all of them were.
~~~~~
"Jaenelle..." Arsen said softly, "I'm sorry, love."
The once-Hunter nodded to Shadow, laughing a little and watching as he handled the little shifter girl with infinite care. Finaly, Jaenelle sighed, looking at Arsen tiredly, her wrist was still bleeding and now dripping onto the bedspread, mingling with the blood that had come from Arsen's side. Then her gold-green eyes flickered away from him, brown hair swingin in front of her face as she turned away from him and pulled the shirt she was wearing over her head, leaving her in shorts and a bra.
"Why are you sorry this time, Arsen?" the vampiress asked after a moment. "For lying to me or for making me worry?"
The blood continued to flow from her wrist and she extended it to her mate again.
"Take it, Arsen, I don't need it as much as you do and you know that I'm right. For, godssakes, Shadow just ripped into your side and your lungs to get a piece of a knife out that you took for me, so just, give me some peace of mind and take it."
Jae's face was still turned away from Arsen and she refused to look at him, just thrust her wrist into her mate's face.
~~
Eryn looked up at Shadow tiredly and nuzzled her face into his neck, breathing in the scent of the werewolf and looking back over his shoulder at the little house that they were leaving, slightly perplexed.
"Who were they, Shadow?" Eryn asked after a moment; she knew who they were, literally, but she didn't understand their attitudes. She was guessing they were mates, but Shadow had seemed so comfortable with them and he was a werewolf and they were vampires- mortal enemies. It just didn't make sense to a mind that had grown up in such a twisted kingdom as Crimson Moon.
Arsen sat up a little and grabbed her wrist and laid back down, pulling her arm around his neck. He nuzzled her neck affectionatly.
"For everything," He said softly, "If I hadn't been so careless, we wouldn't be here. I had enough chances to kill Daemonar, and I haven't been able to do it."
Arsen was so tired now. He wanted nothing more than to lay with Jaenelle as they once had-Jaenelle on her back, Arsen's head on her chest, and his arm around her waist.
"I can be so stupid," He mumbled, laughing quietly.
~~~~~
"My friends," Shadow told her with a smile, "Now what do you say to getting some sleep, huh? Then we'll see Remus tomorrow."

Jaenelle started a little, pulling away from her mate's neck and looking down at Arsen with surprise written all over her features.
"You are not stupid and never will be stupid," the vampiress replied, leaning down and putting her lips over Arsen's before slipping off of the bed and getting a towel and gently wiping down his side. Then Jae climbed back into the bed, rolling onto her back and pulling Arsen's head onto her chest before gently carding her fingers through his hair, making sure that Arsen wasn't leaning on the side that Shadow had recently ripped into. "And not killing Daemonar is a mistake we've both made, Arsen. I've had chances to kill him too, but haven't taken them. It's not just your fault."
She sighed gently, stirring Arsen's hair up and gently bringing her wrist up to his mouth; it had healed already, but there was blood smeared all over it.
"Will you clean that off for me, love?" she asked tiredly as she continued to absently run her fingers through his hair with her other hand, yawning. "Then let's catch some sleep. I have a feeling that whatever Shadow wants to talk about will take some time out of our morning."
~~
Eryn paused at Shadow's answer, contemplating it and then looked at the smile that was gracing the blind werewolf's features before nodding quietly and burying her face back into his neck. She didn't particularly want to see Remus anymore, she found that she was quite content to stay with the werewolf and that his two vampire friends were beyond interesting for entertainment.

Arsen licked her wrist and nodded.
"Its probably not good news," Arsen said, his voice muffled by her wrist.
When he was done he grabbed her hand and kissed before drapping his arm across her hips.
He could remember laying with her like this when she was pregnant, except his head had been on her stomach.
And he felt a longing for that once more.
~~~~~
"Good," Shadow smiled at her and began walking her down the crunching dirt roads to his den.
As Arsen's arm draped over her hips, Jaenelle also remembered that time when it had been just them, going to sleep on their bed, Arsen watching over her protectively. Only then, it had been in the capital of Daemonar's empire and not in a rundown shack on the edge of a rebel camp, yet Jae still felt the same longing that her mate did. It was wartime, one of them could die soon and they would never have another chance like this. After all, this was the first time in a while that she and Arsen were by themselves in their own home, away from everyone; it would also most likely be the last time for a while that they were like this since the rebels were planning a strike soon and the planning would be taking up a lot of Arsen's time in the near future.
"Yes, most likely it isn't good news, but what can you expect? We're at war," Jaenelle murmured quietly, pushing herself up a bit and gently kissing Arsen's hair as she continued running her fingers through it, watching her mate's reactions. After a moment, feeling she couldn't just leave it at that, the vampiress continued softly, "I love you, Arsen, you know that, right?"
Jae pushed herself back up and quickly kissed Arsen before lying back down and continuing to run one hand through Arsen's hair while letting the other one roam over his chest, tracing the scars that she hadn't been able to run her hands over in a little over three months.
~~
Eryn listened to the dirt crunch under Shadow's feet and sighed a little, resting her head on the werewolf's shoulder. They passed other refugees and, whenever they did, Eryn turned her face away from them, unable to bear looking at all these people who had hopelessness shining out of their eyes. As they continued walking, Eryn started to drift into sleep that was plagued by nightmares of her time in Crimson Moon.
"I love you too," Arsen mumbled, his lips struggling to say the words as he closed his eyes. He always had fallen asleep when she started playing with his hair. It made him feel safe. It always had.
And he was suddenly asleep, only breathing with a purr rumbling through him that served as his snore.
~~~~
"You can sleep, little one," Shadow said, "I don't mind. I'll get you home safely."
~~~~~
Arsen wasn't sure how long he had been asleep when he jolted awake from his nightmare. It may have been minutes, maybe hours.
He sat for a few moments, stunned, then hung his head, his shoulders shaking in a sob.
It had been one of his reoccuring dreams. The one where he'd been sleeping in a hamock wit L'arial and Jaenelle only to find corpses. Then he was falling, Daemonar's laughter echoing around him.
Jaenelle smiled softly as she heard Arsen begin to snore, continuing to map out the scars on his chest and gently running her hand over his side to check how the healing was going. Only then did she let herself relax and begin to fall into sleep. The comforting weight of Arsen's head on her chest and the rise and fall of his lungs next to hers was reassuring and always let her know that her mate was safe as he slept next to her; they were safe and wherever they were was home, as long as they were together.
Jae fell into sleep with a smile on her face and one hand resting, tangled in Arsen's hair.
~~
"Promise?" Eryn mumbled into the side of Shadow's neck, forcefully trying to pull her mind out of the sleepy state that was currently inhabiting it. The shifter knew that the nightmares would plague her and she wasn't too crazy about that idea at the moment.
~~
Jaenelle's body was curled up around Arsen's shoulders, like a cat and when he sat up, she groaned slightly at the loss of his weight and warmth next to her before curling into the dip in the bed that he had created with his body heat. The vampiress cracked one eye open and reached for Arsen blindly.
"....okay....?" she mumbled after a few seconds, her voice sleep-slurred and sight blurry,not seeing the distressed state of her mate.
"I promise. You trust me, don't you?" Shadow smiled. They were almost to his home now.
~~~~~
Arsen didn't respond for several minutes, trying to get his breath under control. Just trying to breath.
"Y-yeah... I'm fine. Just... just go back to sleep, love," He mumbled, one hand haning on his knee, the other holding his head.

"....guess so..." Eryn mumbled as her mind started sliding into sleep a little more. The motion of Shadow's body moving along withthe rhythimc crunch of gravel was slowly lulling Eryn into a more relaxed state of mind, despite the long day and the horrible time that she'd getting into Guardian today.
"Shadow, what're you and....Remus gonna do with.....me tomorrow?" Eryn asked slowly, yawns punctuating inbetween her words.
~~
Jaenelle recognized that tone in Arsen's voice and roused herself enough to sit up on the bed. The vampiress opened up her eyes, which were glowing faintly red in the complete darkness that was covering the house and sighed quietly when she saw her mate's expression. Carefully, she draped both her arms over Arsen's shoulders and pressed her chest into his back, resting her head on his shoulder from behind.
"....Nightmare...?" she asked sleepily, her breath puffing against the side of the First's neck gently as she yawned a little before kissing Arsen's shoulder. "...Which...one...?"

"Depends," Shadow told her, "But, since you don't trust most people, you'll probably stay with me or Remus."
~~~~~
Arsen grabbed one of her hands, pulling it farther over his shoulder and held it upside-down against the hand-print scar.
"The one with you and...." He could barely manage to choke out his son's name, "A-and we're in that hammock... T-then your both dead, smiling at me. Daemonar laughs...
"And I'm falling. Into nothing."
He ran a hand through his hair, his shoulders shaking again. His entire body was shaking-he could feel it. And he Jaenelle could too.
"Really?" Eryn's voice was more awake now and there was excitement running through her tone as she pulled her face away from Shadow's shoulder to look him in the face. "I'll really get to stay with you?"
The idea excited her, more than anything that she'd heard in a while; Shadow was gentle and he took care of her, even when she was being stubborn and....Eryn liked that. She liked being taken care of by the gruff werewolf; she liked the feeling of being....held. After all, she'd had to grow up very quickly, despite being only seven.
~~
Jaenelle's fingers absently traced the scar over Arsen's heart as she listened to him speak. The pleasant rumble in his chest when he spoke was soothing to her, but when he began to shake, she tensed. Swiftly, one of her hands followed Arsen's through his hair, running through the strands gently, soothingly.
"Shhh, baby, shhhh," Jae murmured quietly, pressing her body against Arsen's back tighter. "I'm right here, love, you're okay. I'm right here."
Carefully, the once-Hunter slipped around Arsen until she was in front of him, between his legs, and held his face between her palms, looking into his eyes and then kissing him gently before pulling him into a tight embrace, distractedly running her hands through his hair and down his body. The vampiress continued to whisper reassuring nothings in Arsen's ear, totally leaving Larial out of the equation. There was nothing comforting she could say about that part of the dream....because, it had come true. Larial was dead and Daemonar was still laughing.
((What does Arsen look like again? I forgot -.-'))
(His picture is in the primary characters. Instead of a bandage, he has a clawed scar.)
"Yes. I mean it," Shadow smiled, pushing open his front door, "Now, you can sleep in my bed or I can join you. Your choice."
~~~~~
Arsen whined softly, resting his forehead against her shoulder.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," He mumbled soffly.
"... Its my fault," He finally said softly, "My fault he's gone. Its all my fault he's dead."

Eryn looked at Shadow unsuredly and then outside the door at the refugees that were standing close to the house, making her edgy. The little shifter cocked her head to the side and bit her cheek, concentrating on the decision laying in front of her before finally deciding.
"Stay with me... please," she mumbled quitely, uneasy to find that she would miss him if he was gone; she'd known him for what? Three hours and she was already dependent upon him. But, he would protect her and keep her safe, so Eryn felt that she was justified in deciding to stay with him.
~~
"No, Arsen, it's not your fault," Jae murmured quietly, almost brokenly, but staying strong for her mate. "It's not your fault, love. Larial died because of Daemonar, not because of you or me, not because of something we did. He died because of what we are- what Daemonar is. It’s not your fault. It’s not my fault.”
Jaenelle tried to soothe Arsen, pulling her face up out of her shoulder and holding it between her palms, running her fingers over his features gently, tracing the dearly beloved face and leaving kisses in the wake of her fingers. She tried to smooth away his fears with her love and saddened that it wasn’t working.
“Not your fault, baby. Not your fault.”

"All right," Shadow smiled, carrying her inside then closed the door, "You're not hungry are you? I can get you some food if you are..."
He set her down on the bed before sitting down beside her. The rustic bed creaked under his weight.
~~~~~
"Yes it is," Arsen murured, his eyes glazed over in his fear induced stupor, "I could've stopped them. I should have known. They were my men..."
He pulled Jaenelle's hands off his face and hung his head, holding their hands in his lap. Absently, he ran his thumbs over the back of her hands.
"I'm so sorry," He murmured, his voice breaking. And when he lifted his head, blood was briming in his eyes.
He was crying.
Eryn shook her head back and forth quickly and vehemently, mumbling, "Nuh-uh."
Now that they were in Shadow's home, the little shifter was feeling a little shy about sleeping in the same bed as him, but, instead of showing it, she just lay down and curled up around her hands, looking up at Shadow quietly and laying her head in his lap.
"How long do we get to sleep before you have to go in the morning?"
~~
As the First pulled the vampiress' hands off of his face, Jae felt Arsen's fingers starting to brush over the back of her hands and started a little, trying to pull away from her mate, his hold was stifling and making her wrists ache. he was scaring her. Then she saw his face and almost started crying herself.
"No, Arsen!" Jaenelle struggled to hold back her own tears when she saw the tears of blood brimming in her mate's eyes. "No! It is not your fault, we were all deceived by them; we both trusted them when we shouldn't have. We trusted Daemonar to take care of his godson and he betrayed us instead. It is NOT your fault!"
Jae forcefully pulled her hands out of Arsen's grip and knocked him backwards onto the bed, looking at the tears of blood that were coursing down her lover's features.
"Please, stop crying. Please, love. It's not your fault....not your fault."
Gently, she began licking the bloody tears away from Arsen's face, pinning her mate with her body and not letting him up. Jae would force him to see it wasn't his fault. Because, it wasn't...it was not her fault, if anything it was more her fault, she had let him go, let him run across the courtyard in a dangerous place to go to his father. Now, though after seven years of trying to understand why her son was dead, she knew, rationally, that it was not their fault, but...it was just so damn hard not to blame someone, but she had never blamed Arsen, never.
"It's not your fault," she repeated breathily, licking his face again, keeping the tears from flowing down Arsen's face even as her own flowed down her cheeks. "Not your fault."
"Sleep as long as you'd like. I'll wake you when we have go go. You can even sleep on the way." Shadow smiled at her, settling back on the bed.
~~~~~
"Jaenelle, don't cry for me, please," He rolled over, laying her on her, pinning her to the bed.
He sat up and ran his hands over his face, before leaning down and kissing her, brushing her tears away.
"You know I can't stand it when you cry."

“That would be…nice,” Eryn said after a moment, smiling brilliantly at Shadow before slipping into the bed beside the werewolf and curling up next to his side, borrowing some of the warmth that the larger shifter was providing.
Eryn pulled herself up to lay her head on Shadow’s shoulder and burrowed her face into the side of the werewolf’s neck.
“Why do you have to get up early anyways, Shadow?” the little girl mumbled after a few minutes, yawning quietly every few minutes quietly.

Jaenelle sat up and gently tangled her legs together with Arsen’s.
“When you cry, it makes me cry. We’re bonded together, love! I can’t stand it when you cry either………….. I think that we need to talk....”
The vampiress continued to gently run her hands through Arsen’s hair, tugging on it gently to make him focus, and look at her, focus on her. Jae shook her head slowly back and forth after a moment, letting her hair fall over her eyes and block her thoughts from Arsen’s view.
This wasn’t working…
“Look, we’re both tired and I think that it’s a little too late to be having this conversation, Arsen. We need a little…time off or something, Arsen.”

"I just get up early," Shadow said, "Always have.
"Get some sleep, little one. You'll need it," Shadow smiled.

Arsen watched her for a moment before shaking his head, "Jaenelle...."
He leaned forward and rested his forehead on her shoulder.
"I-I'm sorry. I just need some sleep. We both do... Its been a long day."

“Mkay,” Eryn grumbled after a moment before burying her head into Shadow’s body and rolling into his side like a lug before tucking her feet up against his thighs to get more warmth out of him. “I’m gonna….go to sleep….now….see you…in the morning.”
The little shifter curled up comfortably before slowly drifting into a light slumber.

Jaenelle looked at Arsen’s head that was resting on her shoulder for a moment and then leaned her own head against it before spilling out all the fears that had been plaguing her lately when Arsen had left her alone with the children and her thoughts too long.
“No, I’m sorry,” Jae said after a moment, pulling away from the First and, instead, sliding her feet off of the bed. “I’m just…really tired, Arsen. Really, really tired of this. Sometimes, I think that just… staying… with each other is bad for us. We’re stuck with Larial’s death hanging between us and we don’t have enough time to even talk through it. I think that, maybe we should just take a break. Maybe we should just…back off for a while.”
Jae turned her face away and refused to look at Arsen. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to leave him, but she thought that she might need a little time to think, without having to worry about Arsen- she loved him, she wanted kids with him, but he didn’t seem ready to take that step again.
“I think that the rebellion needs all our time and focus right now. There are a lot of people counting on you to make their dreams come true, Arsen, and I think that you should focus more on that right now. I don’t know, maybe we should just sleep on it. Just know that I do love you, Arsen, and I want to try again for another child, but I don’t think you’re ready and I don’t think that now is the time.”
Jaenelle started shaking her head, turning her back on Arsen, shoulders shaking slightly and voice quivering.
“Oh, I don’t know,” she mumbled after a moment, not sure what to say anymore.
