She could only watch in horrorr as he flashed her the jagged pink scars running down his wrists. A single thought burst to mind.
"...Why?"
"The pain let's me know I'm alive," in informed, pretending to be interested in the metal spoon he twirled between his long, slender fingers.
"But... Why...?" she asked again, her mind unable to form a full scentence.
"I'm numb. I see, but don't. You can see me, but can't," he carelessly tossed the spoon on the laminate tabletop, "I'm bored."
She watched his back as he left the crowded lunchroom and vanished into the hall.
it was true. She knew nothing about him. Her own brother. He had gone missing long ago, but had returned to them.
Shattered.
She rose to her feet and dashed for the door, bumping into people and upsetting trays.
When she reached the empty hall, she already feared the worst.
She ran up the many flights of stairs, her heart threatening to burst. She knew where he was.
She pushed the door open to the roof, and found him. Her brother was on the edge, his head tilted back and his eyes closed.
"...No..."
Screams peirced the air as a body fell from the roof, a shattered heart following after.

Aliya stood idley behind the bar, running her damp rag over the same spot. It was a slow night again.
She sighed, brushing her long black hair from her face, tucking it behind her ear, where it had fallen from her neat-but-messy bun.
She leaned against the counter then, drumming her fingers on it. This job was so boring, but because it was so empty, it was worth eight dollars an hour. She got paid without doing anything.
However, she wondered where her partner was. Seemed like the perky red head who worked with her was late, or taking a sick day.
Aliya sighed. She didn't really care. Her manager had taken off too, leaving her alone. One man was in the corner of the bar, but didn't want anything and simply sat there.
The girl looked down, brushing off her clothes. The tight dark purple shirt showed off her bust, and the tight black pants fit her form, making her legs look better with the heeled boots she wore.
Really, she did hate it.
Aliya ran her fingers over the cross necklace she wore. A name was carved in the sterling silver.
"Cole..." she sighed softly.

Long fingers, pianist's fingers, brushed lightly over the sensitive scar tissue that spiraled from his wrist, up his left arm and over his chest to trace over his collar bones. The male shivered at the sensation of touch on the tortured flesh and violently pushed his head back against the brick wall of the alley. The smell of blood hit the air and stilled the questing fingers, making the large male sigh at the loss.
His hand slowly dropped to his side as he stood there with the wall supporting his weight, shaking, in the dark recesses of the alley. The scars which, after so long, still gave him pain and pleasure in equal amounts were silent for the moment.
There's something that I need to remember....
A hand went self-consciously to spiky black locks highlighted with red and ruffled it until it stood up straight. As footsteps approached the alley, the male touched the tribal tattoo that spiraled over the right half of his body- a stylized mimicry of the ragged scars that crisscrossed the left half. The right represented strength while the left revealed his pathetic weakness.
"Kaito!"
The male snapped his head towards his name so fast that his uptilted, Asian slanted eyes caught the light oddly and flashed a stomach sickening bloodred. The man standing at the end of the alley just shook his head.
"Stop showing off and let's go! There's a bunch of clubs I want to hit tonight before the sun comes up!"
The male called Kaito nodded slowly, pushing himself off the brick wall and stretching luxuriously. His black tee and ripped jeans swung off of a wiry body that reached a startling 6'2" considering his heritage.
"Let's go then," he rumbled, flashing fang as he stepped into the light of the main street where he and his friend were going trolling.
"Showoff," his friend mumbled, trailing in Kaito's wake as the other vampire walked into a random bar.

Aliya looked up as the door opened. Mustering a warm smile, she called, "Welcome boys. Can I get you anything?"
She went to the shelves in the back, pulling a couple glasses down and poured them some water, "Take a seat. Bars open."
Aliya left it at that and moved to start sorting through the shevles. She was hungry and knew that she had some food tucked back tehre somewhere, but the trick was finding where. The other employees kept eating it.
She grinned when she found it. Simply, a back of white chocolate discs. She grinned and pulled out a few, tossing them in her mouth. The late hours really did screw up her eating and sleeping scheduals.

While the half-Asian vamp had come in first, Kaito's friend, Jay, took the lead with a swagger and slung himself down at the bar like the true Texan he was. His lanky frame spilled onto the bar stool with an eerie grace for all his sharp angles; next to him, Kaito unobtrusively took his seat and looked at his reflection in the mirror of the bartop- this time out of hazel eyes.
"I'll have a Cowboy," Jay twanged in his deep South accent, "and my partner will have a Rumrunner with a vodka shot. And if you'd let me have some of that chocolate, I'd be much obliged."
Kaito shook his head as Jay tossed a wink at the bartender. She was cute, though, he had to admit.

Aliya stifled a groan before pulling out the choclate bag and sliding on the counter, "Have at it."
It was her favorite chocolate, and he didn't want to share, but she wanted to keep her job after all. The girl set to work getting drinks for the two, passing them down when she was done.
"There you go," she offered them another smile, for the sake of politeness. Something about those two really rubbed her the wrong way, but she wasn't showing it.

Kaito nodded politely at the girl as she passed over his drink, taking a swig as he settled in to watch his friend strike out. Jay grinned, reaching out to lay a hand on the bartender's as she passed over his drink.
"Thank you, ma'm," he practically purred; most girls fell immediately for the whole Texas cowboy gentleman, but Kaito could feel the subtle pulling back of one of the humans that was on to their little game coming from this girl. "Would you like to join us at one of the clubs when your shift ends?"
The half-Asian vamp started as he realized that his partner was starting to lay on the persuasion that came so easily to their kind. He tapped his hand against the bar and made the get-out hand motion that they'd agreed upon earlier, but Jay kept forging forward.
"We could have a lot of fun together," he wheedled.

Aliya gave a rather sarcastic smile, "I'd love to, but I've got another job after this. I ahve to watch my cousin's son."
She pulled her hand out from under Jay's, "I can't bail on her."
Aliya turned away from them and started to clean off one of the sparkling glasses.
it was rather obvious they didn't get many customers, and it was a wonder this bar was still in business.

Kaito groaned as Aliya moved away, shaking his head at Jay before slapping the other man upside the head.
"Dumbass, you don't do that to her. And when I tell you get out, then fucking listen to me, geez. Why else do you bring me along?" the spiky haired teen asked, downing the rest of his drink and politely tapping the bar to ask for another one. "May I please have a Screwdriver?"
"Because your prettyass face scores more girls than my Southern manners!" Jay complained, leaning back on the stool and moodily stirring his drink. "I betcha you could make her fall for you if you really tried." The blonde man motioned to the bartender with his chin as he popped a piece of the chocolate into his mouth.

Aliya patiently got kaito his new drink, taking the old glass for cleaning. She listened to the two men's idel prater and shook her head, sighing softly.
It was going to be one of those days, wasn't it?

Kaito picked up on Aliya's thoughts and grinned to himself as Jay continued nattering on about all the girls that he wanted to score tonight. Indeed, it seemed as if it would be one of those nights and, if it was, he intended to get rip roaring drunk- something not easily achieved when your metabolism burned off drinks so fast that once you downed them, the alcohol was practically processed. Kaito tossed back the Screwdriver and asked for another drink from the girl.
"Sorry to bother you, but could you maybe, just keep hitting me? I promise I'll pay," he spread out a handful of cash on the bartop casually, not really looking at how much he'd actually put on the table. He leaned forward conspiratorially, "Just keep me in drinks and it'd really being doing me a favor...and him a disservice," he nodded to Jay who had continued talking though Kaito was obviously not listening. He flashed the ID from the wallet he'd extracted the money from, showing Jay's face. "Wouldn't you like to get back at him for taking that exquisite chocolate?"

Aliya hummed softly, crossing her arms over her chest and pressing a finger to her lips in thought.
"... All right," she decided, "But if I get fired, you owe me."
The girl prepared another drink for him and set it down, clearing out the old glass and starting up another.

Kaito smiled charmingly, gently shaking his head.
"I promise that you won't get fired," the vampire murmured, downing the drink placed in front of him. His long fingers turned the glass end over end contemplatively as he watched the way the scar tissue and tattoos stretch over his skin in a twisted dance. "I might get into some trouble though."
Jay had continued talking, practically monologuing to himself and trying to draw the drunk in the corner into a conversation with him. Kaito watched his partner and sometimes-friend bother the old man and he suddenly felt inexplicably old; though he slummed with the younger crowd, he was over 500 years old.
"Do you ever feel like there's something you have to remember?" Kaito asked softly, looking at his scars.

Aliya didn't respond at first, touching the cross at her collarbone, "... Always."
She handed him the knew drink, "What's your name? I've never seen you around before."

Kaito looked up as Aliya touched the cross and subtly flinched; while holy relics didn't have any power against him anymore, it was still a reflex to stay away. Though there was something engraved on this one, the vampire narrowed his eyes, trying to see what was written there. As the vampire took the drink, he answered Aliya's question.
"I'm Kaito," he said, starting to down the drink slowly and steadily, wanting more than anything- in that moment- to get slightly buzzed. "And I don't usually come around here anymore. I've been...out of town for a while. What's your name?"

"Pretty name. Nice to meet you as well," Kaito answered, holding onto that fleeting smile like he did the memory of the last time he saw the sun shine- it was one of the only genuine smiles he'd received in a long time. "May I have about 5 shots lined up though? My aim for tonight is to be as useless to him," he motioned his head towards Jay, "as I can."

"I can do that," Aliya giggled. She got everything ready and set it out for him, then leaned on the counter, "You aren't very kind to your friend, huh?"
She gave another amused giggle.

Kaito smiled wanly, just wanting to see more of Aliya's sweet smiles. His gaze slid to Jay who was still talking to the sad drunk and then he leaned over the counter until he was practically whispering in the girl's ear. His voice lowered conspiritorally, breath brushing against Aliya's skin and her scent flooding his senses.
"It's because he's not really my friend," Kaito murmured. "He's just using me and I'm getting tired of it." He retook his seat and took a shot. "I've decided to become a problem that he can't ignore because I can't continue on like this....."
Kaito snapped out of it and shook his head a little.
"So, why're you working so hard?"

"Because I want to prove that I'm worth something," she told him, "I don't want to follow the path my brother took."
She diverted the conversation then, "I don't have to watch my cousin's son, I just wanted to get him off my back."

Kaito noticed the abrupt change of topic and, though his interest had been peaked on the topic, he allowed the conversation to change course. The hazel eyes lit up though when he heard that Aliya wasn't really working and he leaned forward again after downing another shot; his eyes glittered with excitement and his body hummed with energy.
"Then would you like to blow some more of this idiot's," his eyes cut to Jay for a moment who had seemingly paused in his ramble to gain some air, "money with me? We could go dancing, if you'd like?"

Aliya laughed, "we'll see. I'm not supossed to date the customers.
"Hopwever, I think I can make an exception."
She smiled at him again, "I get off in about an hour, my paretner was supossed to be here... But, I don't think there will be a problem if I close early either. It's not like there's a crowd."

Kaito smiled, a genuine smile- something he hadn't done in a long time. The muscles felt kindof rusty and he worried for a second that it would look funny, but then he looked at Aliya and just decided that it didn't care. She had decided to come with him; he hadn't done any persuasion or anything, even shown his vulnerable side, and she had still acquiesced to his request.
A heartbeat later, if he'd had a heartbeat, he realized that smiling would mean revealing his fangs, so he quickly stopped grinning and merely nodded, standing up quickly.
"All right, I'll see you in an hour, then," he murmured, quickly downing the rest of his shots and grabbing the back of Jay's jacket as he walked out of the bar, casually sliding the man's wallet back into his pocket as he did so. "We'll just get out of your way until then."
The two vampires walked out of the bar and Kaito felt another grin coming on, but that was spoiled when Jay punched him playfully in the shoulder.
"I told you that you could score on that chick!"
Kaito nodded slowly, slanting his gaze, which was slowly reddening, away from his partner as they walked up the street towards one of the clubs.
"Yeah...you did."

Aliya watched them leave, confused, then started to clean up, putting the moeny in the cashregister and grabbing her bag of chocolate and stashing it away.
Soon, and hour passed with her just standing behind the counter. Her partner, the perky red-head, finally showed up and let her go. Aliya thanked her wnd went back, changing into her street clothes of jeans, tenis shoes and a tanktop with a design scrawled across the chest.
She hopped the counter and stood on the other side, chatting with her partner as she pulled her hair down and combed it out with her fingers.

An hour later, Kaito wandered back down the street towards the bar where he'd met Aliya. The light from the street lamps caught the tattoo on his arm oddly and made it seem as though it were flashing; the vampire flexed his muscles and the tattoo rippled as if alive. He smirked, feeling powerful and on top of the world. He had already fed tonight and the blood running through his veins....it made him feel as if he could do anything.
The vampire opened the door to the bar and strolled into it, hands in his pockets, hazel eyes searching for the girl he'd met earlier. When they landed on her, Kaito's eyes lit up and the cocky smirk softened. He really wanted this human girl to like him for some strange reason.

Aliya was still chatting with her partner when Kaito returned. When the other girl looked to the door, Aliya looked as well and smiled.
"I'm off," she said, "See you tomorrow. And don't be late again, Chelsey."
"I won't!" the redhead promised.

Kaito watched silently as Aliya said her goodbyes and looked at her partner curiously. So, this was the girl that had been late earlier; Jay may have been able to score off her if he'd really wanted to. Then his attention became wrapped up again in the human girl. Kaito offered out his arm to Aliya and then realized that might not seem like the right century and instead held out his hand.
"May I show you the wonders of this night?" he asked softly, opening the door of the dingy little bar onto the streets of the city that held amazing pleasures and the darkest of cruelties.

Kaito followed after her, still feeling on top of the world, but content to follow in her footsteps for a time. Feeling silly, he grabbed Aliya around the waist and swung her around to face him, smiling down at her softly.
"So, where shall I take my lady that she hasn't been?" he mused. "A seedy bar does not seem readily appropriate, nor does a hooker club. But...maybe, just maybe....have you ever visited the club Resurrection?" Kaito named the vampire club, run by the city's Master, curious to see Aliya's reaction; he really wanted to bring her to a special place and Resurrection was one of those places in the city that he considered truly his. "I assure you, if you have not, it is a singular pleasure that I would like to share with you. It's one of the places where I feel truly...myself."

Kaito grinned at the tacked on afterthought and then paused for a moment- he'd been grinning like a fool around this mortal in one night more than he'd smiled in the last fifty years at least. It felt...odd to say the least. The next moment, he snapped out of his thoughts and looked down at Aliya, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, not trying to hold her, but offering comfort and protection.
"I'm not trying to get you to do anything bad. I just want you to...understand me a little more," Kaito murmured softly. "And with me, I promise you'll be safe."
