A smile formed on Toru's face. "Good."
With Valentine's last statement Toru let his head fall to the side; his purple hair fell over his eyes. His brow furrowed and he swatted the strands aside with his hand. "What do you mean?" Toru was unaware that vampires could exist without drinking blood everyday.

"I suppose part of it's my age, but always I've been able to sense people's emotions. As a child it was just that, just a perception. But as I got older I discovered that energy could be obtained from the emotions of others," Valentine said. "There is an energy current that passes through everything living. Everything has its moods- people, the sea, the weather, even trees, each with a different output level. If I'm around people, I can feel what they feel and draw enery from it. I . . . try to avoid taking blood. . . ." He drew into himself for a heartbeat, memories flashing through his head that he forced out just as quickly.
He looked at Toru directly, curious to see his expression. "Also, I can eat solid food as a human can, always could."

Toru's mouth moved to the side and his brows came together. He didn't really understand all of what the other vampire was saying but he was damn jealous of Valentine's ability to eat food. "So you can eat candy apples and sushi?" he asked. The purple haired vampire frowned and chewed on his bottom lip. "No fair." His green eyes flashed with questions but he didn't voice them. He'd let Valentine tell him what he wanted.
Toru wanted to be a good student.

"I suppose I could if I wished," Valentine chuckled at Toru's pouting. So much like a small child and too funny to scold. "Though not everything necessarily gets along with me. Cirtic acid is always a doozy." His stomach burned at the thought.
Trying to take the younger vampire's mind off the subject of food, he asked, "Is there anything in particular that you want to learn, Toru? Curiosity is the best sprout for learning, so don't be afraid to ask qestions - I will answer you to the best of my ability, and if I don't know the answer we can look for it."

Toru thought about it. What did he want to learn? His mind was a jumble of questions and he had trouble sorting them all out into a proper order. Green eyes darted back and forth with his thoughts trying to catch the most important ones.
He supposed he knew the basics such as drinking blood and being stronger and more agile than a human. Toru began to ask a myriad of random questions letting go of his English and jabbering on in Japanese.
After a moment he caught himself and covered his mouth with his hand. His green eyes gave away his embarrassment. "Sorry." he muttered.
Toru started over. "So if I'm two years old now, how old can I get?
"Will I always look like this?
"What happens if I cut my hair or lose an arm?"

Valentine raised one glossy red brow when Toru slipped into Japanese as questions flooded out of him. Realizing this, he covered his mouth with the embarrassed look the older vampire was becoming so familiar with. "Sorry."
Speaking coherently, Toru asked, "So if I'm two years old now, how old can I get? Will I always look like this? What happens if I cut my hair or lose an arm?"
"Vampires can get quite old- I'll be 389 this year, and I know of others older than me. We don't die to my knowledge unless we are killed. I believe you'll stay like this, yes. I grew as a normal child would, but stopped at this age, a genetic difference I guess. I know we can't regrow limbs, but I'm not sure about your hair. . . . Has it grown any in the past two years at all?"

Toru flicked at the purple strands in thought. "Nope." He finished off his milk with a smile. "So I shouldn't cut it right? I like it like this." The messy mop of hair was perfect for the boy. "Unless I am killed I won't die, so neither will my brother." Toru was a bit uneasy about this, knowing that he couldn't outlive the one person he feared.
"What about special powers? Do I get any?" he asked with excitement.

"Heh, funny, my hair grows. But if you like your hair then keep it that way," Valentine said. The red-head got horribly tickled at Toru's question about powers. It wasn't so much the question itself as the look on his face as if he was going to come out of his chair.
"I'm not sure," the older of the two said, trying to suppress a chuckle. "That's something we'll have to test. Not everyone has gifts- usually it's something they've carried over from their time as a human. Or, as in my rare case, you're born with them."
Though some days I wonder if being so sensitive is a gift or a curse, he thought darkly.

"I wish to try!" Toru said animatedly. The young man picked up a spoon and scrunched his face; he looked at it, willing it to bend backward. Toru held his breath and moved his face in all directions. When the spoon didn't bend his face fell and he set it down. "Well, I'm not psychic."
Once again his face lit up and he looked at the napkin on the table. His green eyes willed it to burn. He stared at it for more than a minute before exhaling and looking at Valentine. "What kind of powers do vampire's get again?"

It was all Valentine could do not to fall out of his chair laughing as Toru contorted his expression this way and that as he tried to bend the silverware with his mind and failed, only to try to get the napkin to ignite in the same fashion.
"What kind of powers do vampire's get again?" he asked.
"It depends on the individual," Valentine explained. "Some are psychic, others are extrodinary hunters. Vampires with pyrotechnical abilities are rare to my knowledge because we don't get on well with fire. Then there are some who are empaths like I am and are skilled at manipulating emotions and other things."

"So I didn't get any?" Toru asked a little dejected. "Oh well." He said with a shrug. If he did get some sort of dark gift, it would show itself eventually. The young vampire couldn't think of anything else to ask. He stared at the red-head with bright green eyes.
While he thought about it, he spoke. "My eyes used to be brown you know." The vampire pointed to his face. "I had regular old brown Asian eyes. My brother got lucky, he got really rare blue eyes. My eyes turned green when I became a vampire though." Toru showed off his fangs in a cheeky smile.

"That's not unheard of," Valentine mused. He had met others who had told him that upon being turned that their eyes and hair color had changed. A thought came to him and he chuckled. "I'll have to introduce you to Lilly some time." It had crossed his mind that if Toru ever saw Lilly he'd get a kick out of her neon-blue hair.
"My eyes have always been thus, this stormy blue-grey, though if I'm mad they tend to get darker."

"It's the same with my brother, he got to keep his blue eyes." Toru paused, perhaps he shouldn't talk about Atorey so much. It was almost like Toru admired and depended upon his twin. He could stand alone, he told himself. "Who's Lilly?" he asked curiously. The young vampire was about to ask if it was his girlfriend or something but decided against it. He didn't want to offend his newly acquired teacher.

"Lilly is my one and only fledgeling." Valentine pondered how to explain himself for a moment. "She is like a younger sister to me and yet at the same time the closest I will come to having children most likely. She has green eyes like you do and bright blue hair. It's her favourite color other than black."
He missed Lilly and her quirky sense of humor and short fuse. But she was smart enough to take care of herself. He couldnt smother the poor child all the time.

Toru unconciously put a hand to his purple hair. "Baka." he mumbled to himself in Japanese. Valentine had only seen his Lilly in him, it wasn't that Toru was special like he'd originally thought. Still he forced a smile and said, "she was lucky to have you be her teacher." Toru chewed at his lip and looked around at the other people sitting near them.
The clouds were moving about, leaving gaps large enough to see the stars through.

Again one brow came up. "Now what did I say that caused you to say 'idiot'?" he enquired, genuinely curious. Had he upset Toru?
"You and Lilly are actually quite different. She is not quiet unless required to be, and she has a short temper at points and is horribly stubborn. As much as I love her, believe me when I say there were days I contemplated tying her up and leaving her somewhere for a short while." With a laugh Valentine added, "I don't foresee that being the case with you, with will be a very pleasant change."

The young vampire was surprised to know Valentine understood his self directed insult. Again without thinking he said, "sounds like Atorey." His smile was genuine. His brother was so loud and obnoxious and rude and unbearable. "You know, if you're going to be my teacher and all, would you help me out?" Toru asked hesitantly.

"Of course, Toru. I will help you however I can, so long as doing so doesn't pose any moral issues." Valentine had always liked helping others, but nearly 400 years of life had taught him the hard way that not everyone was as sincere as the younger vampire seemed to be. He took a drink of his coffee, savoring it before swallowing. Some vampires got by on alcohol . . . he'd stick with caffine.

Toru flinched slightly and shut his eyes. "Uh, no." The young vampire rubbed his jaw and shifted. "He didn't feel like telling me." Toru opened his eyes and swung his legs back and forth like a child. Uncomfortable with the subject and the memories brought about by it the young man spouted a stupid line. "So, how about that local sports team?"

Valentine noted the discomfort that was obvious in Toru and decided from that point on he wouldn't bring up things pertaining to Atorey. Let the boy go at the pace that was comfortable for him.
Again trying to redirect the subject to more comfortable matters, he asked, "I'm guessing you live somewhere close to work, yes? I know you walk there, but I wasn't positive."

When both of them were finished with their drinks, Valentine paid the bill, leaving a nice tip for their waitress. He was glad they'd done this, the night was proving very informative. Having gained a better understanding of Toru's circumstances made him feel better prepared, particullarly if he was going to be teaching him.
"So," the red-head asked, "anything you wanted to do while we're out?"

When Valentine asked his question Toru floundered. He'd never been one for decisions, nor did he ever plan ahead. "Not really." he answered meekly. The young man was very grateful that Valentine had offered to school him in his vampirism, but he was so shy that it was almost a waste of the other vampire's talents.
"If there is no else, does that mean you're going home?" a hand ran through his purple hair as his green eyes shifted away.

"If there is no else, does that mean you're going home?" Toru asked, not making eye contact.
"Not necessarily," Valentine said. "I've fed a little from being exposed to the people back at the cafe, but I could do better. . . ."
The older vampire stood and pondered a moment, his head canted to one side while trying to devise a solution. Continuing to think, he started down the sidewalk at a very nonchallant pace. "This is always my biggest problem, getting enough to be satisfied. I suppose it would be easier if I just took blood, but. . . ." He paused, hesitant of how to phrase his thoughts. His voice held the slightest note of sadness when he said, "That's when the problems start." This time it was Valentine's eyes that glanced down and away.

"What problems? Does not agree?" Toru asked without thinking. He was a very unobservant fellow and hadn't noticed Valentine's discomfort. The purple haired vampire let his head fall to one side while looking up at his teacher with curious eyes. His pace was a little more rushed than the other vampire's. Toru was only five foot three, and his stubby little legs worked to keep up with Valentine's long legged, lazy stride.
The nightlife in this stretch of neighbour hood was less than classy. The two men with their odd hair colours attracted some attention.

Valentine shoved his unease aside. He had told Toru not to be afraid to ask questions, and this was an answer he was capable of providing. In any case, it was probably safer that the younger vampire know now what he was dealing with.
"I have a large appetite when it comes to feeding. My preference is energy but when I can't get enough, which is more often than not, it carries over into bloodlust. Being someone with naturally obsessive tendencies, this can be very dangerous."

"Obsessive tendencies?" Toru asked unsure of what the phrase meant. "You cannot settle for just one?" He placed a finger to his lips while looking at the other vampire. "Will I be like that one day?" Toru didn't like that thought. It was bad enough feeding almost everyday as it was. The young vampire wasn't fond of taking lives but it was a necessity for him.
In his daze he tripped over a rise in the sidewalk, stumbling forward and turning red with embarrassment. "Sorry." he muttered. People turned to look and a few were giggling at him.

"An obsessive tendency is a condition where if someone likes something, they mess with it until it becomes an obsession, almost like an addiction." A small, wry smile pulled at one corner of Valentine's mouth. "No, dear boy, you won't be like that. You may have to feed often now, but you'll learn how to control it as you get older, and you'll need less."
When Toru apologized for tripping he replied, "It's okay, we all trip now and then." The giggles of some of the people around them reached Valentine's keen ears quickly. Offering him a hand up, the older vampire fixed them with an icy, hooded glare.
I see you, he projected via aura.
